The talk:
So now because we have this word beer, I will re-talk about swarthi. The word swarthi, which as per the modern understanding is a person who is selfish.
So when we say in India, don't be a swarthi or you are a swarthi person, it often implies that you are greedy and selfish.
If you look at the deeper meaning of the word or try to look where it is originating, you will realize the word has two separate words combined together. One is swaha- “The Self” and second is Arthi, coming from the word Arth, which means- “The meaning”
So swarthi combined together from two words means the one who has understood the meaning of the self, swaha arthi, understanding the meaning of the self. So that's one origin, meaning of the word. Second is when you understand the meaning of yourself, what happens? The self as you know is dead and the real self is realized.
And when the real self is realized, the self as you know is dead, you are the one which is now taking out its funeral procession. So swaha means self and Arthi means beer, the frame on which a dead body is carried. So swarthi also means you carry the dead body of yourself, the self as you know.
So two meanings combined together, knowing the meaning of oneself, swarthi and when you know the meaning of oneself, yourself, you carry the dead body of the real, the false self and the real self comes in. So swarthi is a very beautiful word and we say be swarthi, know your true meaning and carry the beer, the Arthi of your false self. And this was used as a technique in the past.
People contemplated on finding the true self and every day working towards realizing the false, this is false, go away, this is false, go away.
The word Swarthi is one of the most beautiful words, yet also one of the most misunderstood. In common understanding, it is often interpreted as “selfishness.” But when observed deeply, the word unfolds into layers of profound spiritual meaning.
The word Swarth can be seen as a union of two parts:
1. Swa - Oneself
2. Arthi - Here Arth means- "The Meaning". So Arth is some one who has understood the meaning. The meaning of themselves.
In this sense, Swarth represents Self-Realization - the state of one who has understood the truth of one’s own being. A person who has truly known oneself, beyond borrowed identities and conditioned perceptions.
There is also another deeper interpretation:
1. Swa - Oneself
2. Arthi - Bier; the wooden structure used in India to carry a dead body for cremation
Here, Swarthi symbolizes one who carries the old identity - the ego, the false self, the conditioned mind - to its cremation.
The personality that one once believed to be “I” is seen as temporary and is allowed to dissolve. What dies is illusion; what is born is awareness.
When these two meanings are brought together, Swarth becomes a path of transformation:
to carry away the false identity for its dissolution, and through that dissolution arrive at Self-Realization.
True Swarthiness is not selfishness. It is the courage to go inward, to let the ego burn, and to awaken to one’s real nature.
Practice this inner understanding of Swarth, and you move closer to liberation.
